The Human Genome Project-What it is

RESERCH SECTION

The Human Genome Project is:
The Human Genome Project is an international effort formed in 1988. This project was designed to find and identify all the forty six chromosomes of the human body. This project was started and explored by the National Institutes of health and the Department of Energy. In 2003 it was declared that the human genome only contains about 30,000 to 40,000 genes. According to these scientific organizations the approxamit amount of chemical letters of the human DNA is 3.1 billion letters.

The origanal goals for the Genome Project were:
identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA,
determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA,
store this information in databases,
improve tools for data analysis,
transfer related technologies to the private sector, and
address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project

The projects Progress:
The projects has been making steady progress. In 2006 it was declared that there are only 24 human chromosomes left to identify. This means they have identified a total of 22 chromosomes.

ANALASIS SECTION

I think that the Human Genome Project will help us in 3 ways. I think that the knowledge alone will help us understand how to make genetic changes in animals and our own bodies. Second i think that if we can make genetic changes in our own body then that might be the answer to many scientific theorys. Finally I think that the knowledge of DNA will help us realize the vast complexity of it.
